Sprinter Glow Plug Symptoms: How to Know Before You Pull the Intake

If your Sprinter cranks longer than usual below 40F and then runs rough for the first minute, glow plugs are the first place to look — but they are not the only cause, and the wrong diagnosis costs a day of labor.

What a failing glow plug actually looks like

  • Extended cranking only when the engine is cold. A warm-start problem is not a glow plug problem.
  • White or blue smoke for the first 30 to 90 seconds, clearing as the engine warms.
  • A rough, uneven idle immediately after startup that smooths out.
  • A check-engine light with codes in the P0670 to P0678 range, often naming a specific cylinder.
  • What it is not

If the van cranks hard hot and cold, look at the fuel side — filter, lift pump, or injector return flow. If a single cylinder misfires even fully warm, you are chasing an injector or compression, not a heater element.

Why they fail on the OM642 and OM647

Element resistance climbs with every heat cycle. On the OM642 V6, cylinders 2 and 3 sit in the hottest part of the block and go first. On the T1N OM647, the plugs are usually simply old — twenty years of heat cycles drifts them out of spec long before they fail outright.

Replace the set, not the one

Once one plug is out of spec, the rest are close behind, and the labor is already spent. Do all of them, use anti-seize, and torque to spec — these thread into aluminum.
