What This Part Does

The front brake pad wear sensor clips into the front brake pad backing plate at each front caliper. As the pad friction material wears down, the sensor's resistive wire element eventually contacts the rotating brake rotor. That contact erodes the wire, changing its resistance and triggering the brake pad warning light in the instrument cluster — giving the driver advance notice to replace the pads before metal-to-metal contact damages the rotors. The sensor is a single-use component: once it contacts the rotor and triggers the warning, the wire is destroyed and the sensor must be replaced together with the brake pads.
