The lower radiator hose is one of the most overlooked parts of the cooling system — until it fails. What This Part Does

The lower radiator hose is the return leg of the main coolant circuit — carrying cooled coolant from the radiator outlet directly to the water pump inlet. Unlike the upper hose, it runs on the cooler, lower-pressure side of the system, which means internal collapse from age and heat cycling is the more common failure mode rather than rupture. A collapsed hose restricts flow just as effectively as a leak.
