A deteriorated valve cover gasket on a VS30 Sprinter will push oil out of the top of the engine — onto the cylinder head, down the sides of the block, and onto hot exhaust components where it burns and produces a persistent oil smell that gets worse every time the engine heats up. This is the Victor Reinz valve cover gasket for VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 2.0L OM654 diesel engine, a direct replacement that restores a clean, leak-free seal between the valve cover and cylinder head.

What This Part Does

The valve cover gasket seals the joint between the aluminum valve cover and the cylinder head on the OM654's DOHC valvetrain. It maintains a pressurized oil seal that keeps oil inside the camshaft gallery while keeping contaminants, water, and debris out of the valvetrain. The gasket also seals around the spark plug tubes — a common secondary leak path when the gasket hardens and shrinks with age. On the OM654, the valve cover integrates the crankcase ventilation system and fuel injector wiring harness, meaning the cover is disturbed any time injector service, camshaft work, or timing chain service is performed — making the gasket a routine replacement item in the course of regular maintenance.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Valve Cover Gasket

  • Oil pooling on top of the cylinder head or running down the sides of the engine
  • Burning oil smell from the engine bay, particularly after the engine reaches operating temperature
  • Oil on or around the spark plug tubes, causing misfires or ignition coil contamination
  • Visible oil residue or sooting around the perimeter of the valve cover
  • Gradually dropping oil level with no obvious external leak source elsewhere on the engine

When to Replace

Replace when the gasket shows hardening, cracking, compression set, or any sign of oil seepage at the valve cover perimeter or spark plug tubes. Also replace any time the valve cover is removed for other service — reinstalling a used gasket on a freshly torqued cover is a reliable way to create a new leak. Victor Reinz gaskets are manufactured to OE specification using the same materials and dimensions as the original.

VS30 OM654 Specific — VIN Verification Required

This valve cover gasket is for VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 2.0L OM654 diesel engine. It is not compatible with VS30 models equipped with the 3.0L OM642 or NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 2.1L OM651. Always verify your engine code and VIN before ordering.
