A leaking rear crankshaft seal flange is one of the most common sources of rear engine oil leaks on the T1N Sprinter — and one of the messier ones to diagnose. Oil seeping from the rear of the engine near the transmission bellhousing is a telltale sign this flange or its seal has failed. This Elring OEM replacement rear crankshaft sealing flange restores a leak-free rear main seal interface and stops oil from reaching the clutch or transmission input shaft.

What This Part Does

The rear crankshaft sealing flange mounts to the rear of the engine block and houses the rear main seal that surrounds the crankshaft as it exits toward the flywheel and transmission. It maintains the oil pressure boundary at the most rearward point of the lubrication circuit. When the flange itself cracks, warps, or the seal surface becomes grooved, oil bypasses the seal and works its way down the back of the engine — often contaminating the clutch disc on manual transmission vehicles.

When to Replace

Replace this flange when you notice oil seeping from the rear of the engine near the flywheel or transmission, during any clutch replacement where rear main oil contamination is found, or any time the crankshaft rear main seal is being serviced. Always replace the seal alongside the flange for a complete repair.
