The swirl flap servo motor is the most common single failure point in the OM642 intake manifold system — and catching it before the plastic flaps break off is the difference between a straightforward motor swap and a full manifold replacement. This is the OEM Pierburg M55 servo motor that controls the intake runner swirl flaps on the OM642 3.0L V6, used across the full NCV3 Sprinter lineup and numerous other Mercedes diesel applications.

What This Part Does

The swirl flap servo motor (also known as the intake manifold runner control motor or M55 motor) electrically positions the swirl flaps inside the intake manifold to adjust air turbulence at the intake ports. At lower RPMs, the flaps restrict airflow to increase swirl and improve combustion efficiency. At higher RPMs, they open fully to allow maximum airflow. When the motor fails, the flaps either stick in one position or — in the worst case — the plastic linkage breaks, sending debris into the engine.

Why Replace This Before It Fails

A failing swirl flap motor typically triggers a P2004 or P2006 fault code and may cause rough idle, reduced power, or hesitation before the flaps physically break. Replacing the motor at the first sign of a code is far less expensive than replacing the entire intake manifold after a flap failure. This is one of the most recommended preventive maintenance items on any high-mileage OM642 Sprinter.

When to Replace It

Replace immediately upon any swirl flap-related fault code (P2004, P2006), or proactively as part of a scheduled high-mileage service. Also replace any time an intake manifold is being serviced to restore the full swirl flap system to spec.
