Worn timing chain guide rails on a Sprinter OM642 allow the timing chain to wander off its designed path under load — producing a distinctive rattle on cold startup, allowing chain slack that can jump a tooth on the cam sprocket, and in severe cases causing catastrophic engine damage from valve-to-piston contact. This is the Febi timing chain rail kit for NCV3 and VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel engine, a complete set of five sliding rails that restores proper timing chain guidance and reduces valvetrain noise on high-mileage engines.

What This Part Does

The OM642's timing chain system uses a double-row roller chain that drives both camshaft banks from the crankshaft. A series of nylon-faced sliding guide rails keep the chain constrained along its designed path, preventing lateral movement, reducing vibration, and maintaining correct chain geometry against the tensioners that maintain chain tension. On the OM642 V6, there are multiple guide rails positioned along the chain runs — five total in this kit — covering the primary chain and secondary chain sections. When the nylon sliding face on a rail wears through or the rail cracks and fragments, pieces can enter the oil circuit, the chain begins wandering and generating noise, and the tensioner can no longer compensate for the increased slack.

Common Symptoms of Worn Timing Chain Rails

  • Timing chain rattle on cold start that clears as oil pressure builds — the classic worn rail symptom
  • Persistent chain noise under load after warm-up — a sign rails are beyond compensation range
  • Timing-related fault codes or camshaft position sensor deviation codes from chain slack
  • Metal or plastic particles in the engine oil from fragmented rail material
  • Timing chain rattle accompanied by rough idle from cam timing variation

When to Replace

Replace when timing chain rattle is confirmed and traced to worn guide rails during inspection, or whenever the timing cover is removed for timing chain or tensioner service. Always replace all five rails as a set — replacing only the most visibly worn rail leaves degraded rails in service that will fail shortly after. Also replace the timing chain tensioners and chain itself during the same service for a complete, long-lasting repair.
