A cracked, warped, or oil-fouled right cylinder head cover on a Sprinter OM642 leaves the right bank valve train exposed and creates oil leaks that track down the side of the engine onto hot exhaust components below. This is the OEM right cylinder head cover for NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel engine, a direct replacement that restores a proper sealed enclosure over the right bank camshafts and valve train.

What This Part Does

The right cylinder head cover — also called the right valve cover — is the aluminum housing that mounts to the top of the right cylinder head and encloses the right bank's camshafts, valve train, and the upper portion of the hydraulic lifters. It forms the sealed upper boundary of the right bank's oiling circuit, keeping pressurized oil inside the camshaft gallery and preventing external contamination from reaching the valve train. On the OM642, the cylinder head cover also provides mounting points for the CCV (crankcase ventilation) system connections and wiring harness brackets that route across the valve train area. When the cover cracks, warps at its sealing flange, or has its bolt bosses stripped, it cannot maintain the seal against the cylinder head — causing oil to seep at the cover perimeter and migrate onto surrounding engine components.

Common Symptoms of a Damaged Right Cylinder Head Cover

  • Oil seeping or dripping from the right side of the engine at the cylinder head cover perimeter
  • Burning oil smell from oil dripping onto the right exhaust manifold or downpipe
  • Visible cracking, warping, or physical damage to the cover body
  • Stripped cover bolt threads that prevent proper torque and sealing
  • Oil accumulation on the right side of the engine block below the valve cover area

When to Replace

Replace when the cover is confirmed cracked or warped beyond sealing, or when bolt boss threads are stripped and cannot be repaired. When replacing the cover, always use a new cover gasket or the specified RTV sealant to the OEM specification — the cover does not seal reliably on a used or compressed gasket.

NCV3 OM642 Specific — VIN Verification Required

The OM642 is a V6 with separate right and left cylinder head covers — left and right are not interchangeable. Always verify your engine code and VIN before ordering.
