What This Part Does

The rear crankshaft seal cover mounts to the rear face of the engine block and provides the precision bore and mounting surface the rear main radial shaft seal requires to maintain contact with the rotating crankshaft snout. The cover must maintain dimensional accuracy at the seal bore to ensure the seal lip contacts the crankshaft uniformly around its circumference — any warping, cracking, or bore damage causes the seal to leak despite otherwise being in good condition. When this cover develops damage, corrosion at the sealing flange, or physical cracking, the seal cannot maintain its designed contact geometry and oil escapes along the crankshaft toward the transmission.
