DESCRIPTION:

Main bearings are one of the most critical wear items in a diesel engine rebuild — they're the thin precision shells that support every crankshaft journal and determine your oil clearances. Get them wrong and your oil pressure, bearing life, and crankshaft longevity all suffer. This Mahle main bearing set for the T1N Sprinter's OM612 and OM647 5-cylinder diesel is a complete standard-size set covering all six main journal positions — everything needed for a full crankshaft bearing replacement in one kit.

What's Included

Six pairs of main bearing shells — upper and lower for all six main journal positions — standard size (STD). Mahle part MS2248P.

What This Part Does

The crankshaft main bearings are thin precision shells pressed into the main bearing bores of the engine block and main bearing caps. They provide the oil film surface that supports the crankshaft as it rotates, transferring combustion loads to the block while maintaining the correct oil clearance for hydrodynamic lubrication. Worn or damaged main bearings cause low oil pressure, knocking, and rapid crankshaft wear — and once a bearing has spun or wiped, the crankshaft journal must be inspected and measured before installing new bearings.

Standard Size — Measure Before Ordering

This set is standard bore size (STD). Always measure crankshaft main journal diameters before ordering to confirm whether standard or undersize bearings are required. A crankshaft that has been ground undersize requires undersize bearings — installing standard bearings on an undersize journal will result in excessive clearance and immediate bearing failure.

When to Replace

Replace during any engine rebuild, when main bearing knock is diagnosed, after any oil starvation event, or when crankshaft journal inspection reveals wear beyond specification. Always replace the connecting rod bearings and thrust washers at the same time for a complete lower end refresh.
