Crankshaft thrust washers are one of those engine components that only gets thought about during a rebuild — but when they wear out, the consequences show up fast. Excessive crankshaft end-play causes knocking, bearing damage, and in severe cases crankshaft failure. This Kolbenschmidt OEM crankshaft thrust washer set for the T1N Sprinter's 5-cylinder diesel controls axial crankshaft movement within factory tolerance and is a required replacement during any engine rebuild or short block installation on the OM612 and OM647.

What This Part Does

The crankshaft thrust washers (also called thrust bearings or thrust plates) are semi-circular bearing shells that sit on either side of the crankshaft's thrust journal — typically at the center main bearing position. They limit fore-and-aft crankshaft movement to a precise specification, preventing the crankshaft from moving axially under the load of clutch engagement, torque converter apply, and drivetrain forces. Worn thrust washers allow excessive end-play that causes the crankshaft to knock against the engine block and damages the main bearing surfaces.

• Knocking noise from the engine that worsens under clutch load
