A failed intake manifold pressure sensor on a Sprinter OM642 gives the ECU incorrect boost and load data — causing it to miscalculate fueling and timing, resulting in rough running, reduced performance, and fault codes that won't clear until accurate sensor data is restored. This is the Bosch intake manifold pressure sensor for NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 3.0L OM642 diesel engine, a direct replacement that restores accurate pressure measurement and proper engine management.

What This Part Does

The intake manifold pressure sensor — also called a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor — measures the absolute pressure in the intake manifold after the intercooler and throttle body. The ECU uses this pressure reading alongside mass airflow, temperature, and crankshaft speed data to calculate the air mass entering each cylinder and set the correct injection quantity and timing. On the turbocharged OM642, manifold pressure is the primary indicator of boost level — the ECU monitors it continuously to verify the turbocharger is delivering commanded boost and to detect under-boost or over-boost conditions. When the sensor drifts, fails electrically, or returns an implausible signal, the ECU's fueling calculations become inaccurate.

Common Symptoms of a Failing MAP Sensor

  • Check engine light with MAP sensor circuit or boost pressure plausibility fault codes
  • Rough idle or hesitation under load from inaccurate air mass calculations
  • Under-boost codes or boost control faults without an identifiable boost system leak
  • Reduced fuel economy with no other identified cause
  • Engine running rich or lean from uncorrected fueling

When to Replace

Replace when confirmed faulty by scan tool with active MAP sensor fault codes. Always use quality OEM-equivalent sensors — MAP sensors are calibration-sensitive and cheap substitutes produce persistent errors.
