What This Part Does

The rear brake caliper is a hydraulic clamping assembly that straddles the rear brake rotor and presses the brake pads against both rotor faces when braking force is applied. On the NCV3 Sprinter 3500's heavier rear axle, the caliper uses a two-piston design sized for the increased stopping loads of a van that may be operated near its maximum GVW. When hydraulic pressure is applied, both pistons extend simultaneously to clamp the pads evenly against the rotor. When pressure releases, the pistons retract slightly to allow the rotor to spin freely.
