DESCRIPTION:

A seized or dragging rear brake caliper on a Sprinter causes uneven braking, rear brake heat buildup, and accelerated pad and rotor wear on one side. On a commercial van that's on the road every day, a sticking rear caliper can go unnoticed until pad wear becomes severe. This is the rear left (driver side) brake caliper with mounting bracket for the NCV3 Sprinter 2500 — a direct-fit replacement that restores full, even rear braking performance.

What This Part Does

The rear brake caliper clamps the brake pads against the rear rotor to generate stopping force at the rear axle. The NCV3 Sprinter uses a floating caliper design with a screw-type piston at the rear — meaning the piston must be rotated clockwise to retract during pad replacement, rather than simply pressed in. When the caliper slides seize, the piston bore corrodes, or the seals fail, the caliper can't release properly — causing brake drag, heat buildup, and uneven pad wear.

Important Service Note: Screw-Type Piston

The rear brake caliper on the NCV3 Sprinter uses a screw-type (wind-back) piston. A standard brake piston press will not retract the piston — a dedicated caliper wind-back tool is required for installation. Using the wrong method will damage the piston seal.
