What This Part Does

The brake light switch is a simple contact switch mounted on the brake pedal bracket. When the brake pedal is depressed, the switch closes and sends a signal to illuminate the brake lights, disengage cruise control, and in some cases inform the ABS and stability control modules that braking is occurring. When the switch fails — either by staying open (no brake lights) or closed (brake lights on constantly) — multiple systems are affected simultaneously.
