What This Part Does

The glow plug is a heating element threaded into the cylinder head that preheats the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber before and during cold starts. On the OM642, the after-glow capable design also continues heating briefly after startup to stabilize combustion during the engine warm-up phase — reducing white smoke, rough idle, and cold-start emissions. A failed plug on one or more cylinders creates a noticeable misfire condition on cold starts that clears once the engine reaches operating temperature.
