A failed coolant temperature sensor on a Mercedes Sprinter gives the ECU incorrect temperature data — causing it to miscalculate fueling, fan control, and timing during warm-up, and potentially masking an overheating condition that would otherwise trigger the temperature warning. This is the Genuine Mercedes-Benz coolant temperature sensor for Sprinter vans, a direct replacement that restores accurate coolant temperature feedback across all engine management and protection systems.

What This Part Does

The coolant temperature sensor is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor that changes its electrical resistance in proportion to coolant temperature. The ECU reads this resistance to determine the current coolant temperature and uses it to adjust fuel injection quantity during cold starts, control radiator fan activation, regulate EGR system operation, and trigger the overheating warning when temperature exceeds the safe threshold. Accurate temperature data is also used by the transmission control unit on automatic-equipped Sprinters and by the instrument cluster for the temperature gauge display. When the sensor drifts, sticks at a fixed resistance, or fails electrically, the ECU's temperature-dependent corrections become inaccurate.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Coolant Temperature Sensor

  • Engine runs rich during warm-up — ECU acting as if the engine is always cold
  • Poor fuel economy from continuous cold-start enrichment
  • Check engine light with coolant temperature sensor circuit or plausibility fault codes
  • Temperature gauge reading incorrectly or not moving from cold
  • Radiator fan running continuously or not activating at all

When to Replace

Replace when confirmed faulty by scan tool with active coolant temperature sensor fault codes. Always drain sufficient coolant before removal to avoid scalding from pressurized coolant escaping at the sensor port.

VIN Verification Required

Always verify your engine code and VIN before ordering — coolant temperature sensor configurations vary by engine family. Contact us and we'll confirm fitment before you buy.
