A failing mass air flow sensor is one of the most common causes of rough idle, black smoke, poor fuel economy, and reduced power on a Sprinter diesel. The MAF sensor is the engine's primary source of intake air data — when it reads incorrectly, the ECU can't calculate the right fuel delivery, and performance suffers across the board. This is the genuine Bosch OEM MAF sensor for 2004–2009 Sprinters with the OM642 and OM647 engines.

What This Part Does

The mass air flow sensor measures the volume and density of air entering the engine and sends that data to the ECU in real time. The ECU uses this data to calculate precise fuel injection quantities for every combustion event. A contaminated, drifting, or failed MAF sensor throws off this calculation — leading to rich or lean running conditions, elevated emissions, rough idle, hesitation, and in some cases, limp mode activation.
