What This Part Does The rear ABS wheel speed sensor is a Hall-effect sensor mounted at the rear axle that reads the teeth of a reluctor ring rotating with the wheel hub, generating a digital signal pulse train proportional to wheel rotational speed. The ABS control module monitors this signal continuously — when one wheel begins decelerating faster than the others during a hard stop, indicating impending lockup, the module modulates brake pressure on that wheel to maintain rolling traction. The same signal is also used by the traction control system (TCS) and electronic stability program (ESP) to detect wheel slip during acceleration and cornering. When the sensor's Hall-effect element fails, its wiring corrodes at the connector, or the sensor body physically cracks from road impact, the ABS module loses its speed reference for that wheel and disables the entire ABS/TCS/ESP system as a safety measure.
