What This Part Does

The intake valve opens during each engine's intake stroke to allow a precisely metered charge of fresh, turbocharged air into the combustion chamber. When the intake stroke is complete, the valve seats against the valve seat in the cylinder head, sealing the chamber so compression can build to the 15.5:1 ratio the OM654 requires for reliable diesel ignition. On the OM654's DOHC 16-valve head, each cylinder uses two intake valves — eight total — working in coordination with the camshaft, rocker arms, and hydraulic lifters to deliver accurate valve timing across the full RPM range. When an intake valve develops carbon buildup on its stem, recession in its seat contact surface, or physical damage, it fails to seal completely — bleeding compression and allowing the combustion event to become incomplete, inefficient, and inconsistent.
