What This Part Does

The exhaust valve opens at the end of each combustion cycle to release burned gases from the cylinder into the exhaust manifold, then closes tightly to seal the cylinder for the next compression and combustion event. On the OM654's DOHC 16-valve head, four cylinders each use two exhaust valves — eight total — that cycle open and closed thousands of times per minute under extreme heat and exhaust gas pressure. The valve must maintain a perfect seal against the valve seat when closed; even minor pitting, recession, or damage to the seating surface allows compression to leak past the valve, directly reducing cylinder pressure and combustion efficiency.
