A failing intake throttle body on a NCV3 Sprinter with the OM651 produces rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, P2112 fault codes, and in advanced cases a throttle plate that sticks closed and causes a no-start — symptoms that won't resolve with cleaning alone once the internal actuator motor or position sensor has failed. This is the Bosch intake throttle body for NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 2.1L OM651 diesel engine, a direct replacement that restores precise electronic throttle plate control and proper intake air management.

What This Part Does

The intake throttle body is an electronically controlled valve mounted in the intake manifold that regulates the volume of air entering the engine. On diesel engines like the OM651, the throttle body is not a primary power control device — diesel engines use injection quantity for power control, not air restriction. Instead, the OM651's throttle body serves several secondary functions: it creates intake vacuum for the EGR system during EGR operation, controls air charge during engine shutdown to prevent diesel run-on, and assists in exhaust gas recirculation by partially closing to increase EGR flow. The throttle plate is driven by an internal electric motor and monitored by a position sensor that the ECU reads continuously. When the motor's brushes wear, the plate's return spring weakens, or carbon buildup on the bore prevents smooth plate movement, the ECU loses throttle position authority and logs fault codes.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Intake Throttle Body

  • Check engine light with P2112 (throttle actuator stuck closed), P0638 (throttle actuator range/performance), or EGR-related fault codes
  • Rough idle, hesitation, or stumble during acceleration
  • Engine that stalls on deceleration when the throttle plate closes but fails to reopen
  • Hard starting or no-start if the throttle plate is stuck in the closed position
  • EGR system fault codes appearing alongside throttle body codes

When to Replace

Replace when throttle body fault codes return after cleaning, when the plate is confirmed stuck or sluggish despite cleaning, or when the position sensor shows out-of-range values on live data. Always perform a throttle body adaptation (basic setting) with XENTRY or a compatible scan tool after installation to calibrate the new unit to the ECU.
