A cracked, warped, or internally corroded oil filter housing on a Sprinter OM642 allows oil to bypass the filter, leak externally, or fail to maintain the pressure boundary between the oil and coolant circuits that share the housing body — and replacing gaskets alone won't solve a problem that originates in the housing itself. This is the Genuine Mercedes-Benz OEM oil filter housing for NCV3 and VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel engine, a complete replacement that includes a new filter element and gaskets and restores the full integrity of the oil filtration and cooling interface.

What This Part Does

The oil filter housing is the central assembly that mounts the oil filter element to the engine block and integrates the oil cooler circuit in one compact unit. Pressurized oil from the pump enters the housing, passes through the filter element where contaminants are removed, and exits back into the main oil gallery to supply the engine's lubricated surfaces. Simultaneously, engine coolant flows through internal passages in the housing to cool the oil via the integrated oil cooler. The housing must maintain separate, sealed boundaries between the oil circuit and coolant circuit — when the housing develops internal cracks, corrosion pits at the oil cooler passages, or its mating surfaces warp from thermal stress, oil and coolant mix or oil escapes externally. On the OM642, housing failure is a well-documented failure mode on high-mileage engines and should be addressed before coolant contamination progresses to bearing damage.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Oil Filter Housing

  • Oil-coolant mixing confirmed in the oil or coolant reservoir — milky oil or oily coolant
  • External oil leak at the housing body or its gasket interfaces
  • Unexplained coolant loss without external leak — coolant migrating into the oil circuit internally
  • Oil pressure loss or warning light from oil bypassing a failed check valve within the housing
  • Burning oil smell from oil weeping onto exhaust components below the housing

When to Replace

Replace when internal oil-coolant mixing is confirmed and traced to the housing body, when external cracks or corrosion are visible on the housing casting, or when repeated gasket replacement fails to stop an oil leak. Always install new gaskets (6421801410REPKIT) and an oil filter when replacing the housing, and flush both the oil and coolant systems to remove contamination from the failed unit.

NCV3 & VS30 OM642 Specific — VIN Verification Required

This oil filter housing is for NCV3 and VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel engine. It is not compatible with NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 2.1L OM651 or VS30 Sprinters. Always verify your engine code and VIN before ordering. Contact us and we'll confirm fitment before you buy.
