The oil filter housing cover on the OM642 3.0L V6 is a more common replacement item than most Sprinter owners expect. The plastic cover is susceptible to cracking — especially when removed with the wrong tool — and a cracked or stripped cover means an oil leak directly from the top of your engine. This OEM-spec replacement restores a leak-free seal and gets your oil system back to spec.

What This Part Does

The oil filter housing cover threads onto the top of the oil filter housing, sealing the filter cartridge in place and maintaining pressure within the lubrication circuit. It includes an O-ring seal at the base that prevents oil from bypassing the filter. When the cover cracks, strips, or the O-ring fails, oil leaks from the housing — a mess that can quickly become a more serious issue if left unaddressed.

Why These Covers Fail

The most common cause of damage to this cover is using the wrong removal tool. The cover requires a specific 14-fluted cap wrench — using channel-lock pliers or an improper socket will crack the plastic or strip the outer edges. If your cover is cracked, stripped, or leaking at the top of the filter housing, this is the correct replacement.

When to Replace It

Replace this cover if you notice an oil leak at the top of the engine near the filter housing, if the cover is visibly cracked or stripped, or if it no longer torques down properly. Always replace the O-ring seal at the same time.
