What This Part Does

The swirl flap actuator motor (also known as the intake manifold runner control motor or setting motor) electrically positions the swirl flaps inside the intake manifold to optimize air turbulence at the intake ports. At lower RPMs, the flaps restrict airflow to increase swirl and improve combustion efficiency and torque. At higher RPMs, they open fully for maximum airflow. When the motor fails, the flaps can stick open or closed — and if the plastic linkage breaks, debris enters the engine.
