A failed crankcase breather valve on a NCV3 Sprinter allows crankcase pressure to build beyond its designed range — forcing oil past seals and gaskets that cannot withstand the excess load, contaminating the intake with oil vapor, and causing the persistent leaks and oil consumption that won't resolve until the valve is replaced. This is the Genuine Mercedes-Benz OEM crankcase breather valve for NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel engine, a direct replacement that restores proper crankcase pressure regulation and clean engine ventilation.

What This Part Does

The crankcase breather valve — also called a CCV (crankcase ventilation) or PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve — is the pressure-regulating component in the engine's blow-by management system. During normal combustion, a small amount of combustion gas leaks past the piston rings and enters the crankcase — this is called blow-by. The CCV valve routes these gases back into the intake system where they are burned rather than vented to atmosphere, while simultaneously maintaining the crankcase at slightly below atmospheric pressure. This negative pressure is critical: without it, the crankcase overpressurizes, pushing oil past seals, gaskets, and the dipstick. On the OM642, the CCV assembly integrates an oil separator that prevents raw oil from entering the intake stream — when the separator membrane fails or the valve sticks, oil passes directly into the intake manifold and turbocharger, contaminating the intercooler and causing oil-laden intake air to reach the combustion chambers.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Crankcase Breather Valve

  • Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, cam cover seals, or front/rear main seals from overpressure
  • Dipstick blowing out or difficult to seat — a classic sign of crankcase overpressure
  • Oil contamination in the intake manifold, intercooler, or charge air pipes
  • Blue-gray smoke at startup or under deceleration from oil entering the combustion chambers
  • Rough idle or reduced power from oil fouling the intake system
  • Oil consumption without visible external leak traced to oil vapor entering the intake

When to Replace

Replace when crankcase overpressure symptoms are confirmed and the valve is found failed, stuck, or clogged with carbon and oil sludge. Also replace when the intake system is being cleaned for oil contamination — a failed CCV valve is the most common source of oil in the OM642's intake and intercooler system. Inspect and replace the CCV breather hoses at the same time.
