What This Kit Does

The valve stem seals sit at the top of each valve guide and meter the small amount of oil needed to lubricate the valve stems without allowing excess oil to enter the combustion chamber. The OM612 and OM647 use four valves per cylinder — 20 valves total — with both intake and exhaust seals required. When the seal material hardens or cracks from age and heat exposure, oil seeps past the guides into the combustion chamber, burning off as blue smoke and leaving carbon deposits that degrade combustion efficiency over time.
