Cylinder head bolts are torque-to-yield stretch bolts — once torqued to spec during a head gasket installation, they permanently deform and must never be reused. Installing a new head gasket with old head bolts is one of the most common causes of repeat head gasket failure, and it's entirely avoidable. This Victor Reinz OEM cylinder head bolt set covers all 12 bolts required for a complete head gasket installation on the T1N Sprinter's 5-cylinder diesel engine.

What This Part Does

Cylinder head bolts clamp the cylinder head to the engine block through the head gasket, creating the pressure seal that contains combustion gases, coolant, and oil within their respective passages. The torque-to-yield design means each bolt stretches a precise amount during the torque sequence, distributing clamping force evenly across the entire head surface. A used bolt that has already been stretched cannot produce the same clamping force — even if it torques to the same value — making reuse a genuine reliability risk.

One-Time Use — Never Reuse

These are torque-to-yield stretch bolts. They must be replaced every time the cylinder head is removed, regardless of how many times they have been previously torqued. This is a non-negotiable requirement specified in the Mercedes-Benz service documentation for these engines.
