A leaking front crankshaft seal is one of the most common sources of front-of-engine oil leaks on every generation of Sprinter diesel — and it's a required replacement any time the timing cover, harmonic balancer, or front crankshaft work is performed. This Elring OEM front crankshaft seal fits all three Sprinter diesel engine families: the T1N OM612 and OM647 5-cylinder, and the NCV3 OM642 3.0L V6 — one seal covering the full range of US-market Sprinter diesels from 2001 through 2018.

What This Part Does

The front crankshaft seal is a lip-type oil seal pressed into the timing cover that surrounds the front of the crankshaft snout. It prevents engine oil from escaping along the crankshaft where it exits the engine block toward the harmonic balancer and drive belt. The seal includes a dust lip that keeps contaminants out of the sealing surface. A worn or hardened seal allows oil to seep past the crankshaft snout — typically appearing as an oil film or drip at the front of the engine below the belt pulley area.

When to Replace

Replace when oil seepage is visible at the front of the engine below the harmonic balancer, or any time the harmonic balancer, timing cover, front seal area, or serpentine belt system is being serviced. This is a smart preventive replacement during any timing chain service, water pump replacement, or major front-of-engine work where access is already available.
