A failed glow plug on a VS30 Sprinter makes itself known immediately in cold weather — extended cranking, rough idle on startup, white smoke from the exhaust, and a misfire that clears only after the engine reaches operating temperature. This is the Genuine Mercedes-Benz OEM diesel glow plug for VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 2.1L OM651 or 2.0L OM654 diesel engine, sold individually for targeted replacement or complete set renewal.

What This Part Does

The glow plug is a resistive heating element threaded directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder. Before and during cold starts, the glow plug control module energizes the plugs to heat the combustion chamber to the temperature required for reliable diesel ignition — compensating for the lower compression heat available when the engine block is cold. On modern diesels like the OM651 and OM654, glow plugs also remain active briefly after startup during the warm-up phase to smooth combustion and reduce emissions during the cold-running period. When a plug's heating element burns out, fractures, or loses its connection, that cylinder receives no preheat — causing a cold-start misfire, white smoke from unburned fuel, and rough idle that takes longer than normal to clear.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Glow Plug

  • Extended cranking before the engine fires, particularly in cold weather
  • Rough idle or misfiring on startup that clears as the engine warms up
  • White or gray smoke from the exhaust during cold starts
  • Glow plug fault codes or check engine light stored after cold start events
  • One or more cylinders running cold on startup, confirmed by scan tool misfire data

When to Replace

Replace when a glow plug is confirmed failed by resistance testing or active fault codes. Also replace as a complete set of four whenever one plug is found failed — glow plugs age together and a replacement single plug on three worn plugs will not correct cold-start behavior on those cylinders. Inspect the glow plug threads carefully on removal and apply anti-seize on installation to prevent seizure at the next service.

VS30 OM651 & OM654 Specific — VIN Verification Required

This glow plug fits VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 2.1L OM651 diesel and the 2.0L OM654 diesel. It is not compatible with VS30 models equipped with the 3.0L OM642 or NCV3 Sprinters with earlier engine variants. Always verify your engine code and VIN before ordering. Contact us and we'll confirm fitment before you buy.
