A failed brake light switch on a Mercedes Sprinter means the brake lights don't illuminate when the pedal is pressed — an immediate safety hazard and equipment violation that puts the van and everyone behind it at risk, and also disables cruise control cancellation and the transmission shift interlock on equipped models. This is the Genuine Mercedes-Benz brake light switch for all Sprinter generations, a direct replacement that restores reliable brake light activation and proper safety system integration.

What This Part Does

The brake light switch is a mechanical contact switch mounted behind the brake pedal on the pedal bracket. When the brake pedal is pressed, the pedal arm releases the switch plunger, closing the circuit and sending power to the brake light circuit — illuminating all rear brake lamps simultaneously. The switch also provides a brake-applied signal to the cruise control system (canceling cruise when the brake is pressed), the transmission control module (enabling shift out of Park on automatics), and the vehicle's safety systems. When the switch's contact wears, its plunger spring weakens, or the switch body cracks, the brake lights become intermittent or fail entirely — and the associated safety interlock functions lose their brake signal.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Brake Light Switch

  • Brake lights not illuminating when the pedal is pressed
  • Brake lights that stay on continuously even when the pedal is released
  • Cruise control that won't disengage when the brake is pressed
  • Inability to shift out of Park on automatic transmission models
  • Brake light fault codes stored in the ECU

When to Replace

Replace when brake light function is confirmed absent or intermittent and the bulbs and fuses have been ruled out as the source. After installation, check plunger adjustment — the switch must contact the pedal arm at the correct travel position.
