A leaking rear crankshaft seal on a VS30 Sprinter allows engine oil to escape along the crankshaft snout at the back of the engine — accumulating on the transmission bellhousing, contaminating the flywheel, and in manual or hybrid applications, reaching the clutch disc before the source is identified. This is the Elring rear crankshaft seal for VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 2.0L OM654 diesel engine, a direct replacement that restores the oil-tight seal at the rear of the crankshaft and eliminates rear main oil leakage.

What This Part Does

The rear crankshaft seal is a radial shaft seal that fits into the rear crankshaft seal cover and contacts the rotating crankshaft at the rear of the engine, just ahead of the flywheel. It maintains a continuous dynamic seal against the crankshaft surface as it spins, preventing pressurized engine oil from escaping along the crankshaft axis toward the transmission. On the OM654, the rear seal is housed in the crankshaft seal cover (a separate bolt-on assembly) — so the seal itself can in some cases be replaced without removing the entire cover, depending on access and wear to the running surface. When the seal's lip degrades from heat cycling, oil contamination, or extended service, oil seeps past the lip and tracks down the rear of the engine. Because the leak point sits behind the flywheel, it is often mistaken for a transmission leak or flex disc leak until the engine is properly inspected.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Rear Crankshaft Seal

  • Oil accumulation on the transmission bellhousing or at the engine-to-transmission junction
  • Oil drips or puddles under the van concentrated toward the center undercarriage
  • Oil contamination on the flywheel or flexplate found during transmission removal
  • Gradual oil level drop with no visible leak at the top, sides, or front of the engine
  • Oil smell from underneath the van after extended operation

When to Replace

Replace when rear crankshaft seal leakage is confirmed and traced to the seal location. The seal is most efficiently replaced when the transmission is already removed for clutch, flywheel, flex disc, or torque converter service — the labor to access the seal is largely shared with those jobs. Always inspect the crankshaft seal running surface for scoring or grooves before installing a new seal; a damaged running surface requires crankshaft seal cover replacement rather than seal replacement alone.

VS30 OM654 Specific — VIN Verification Required

This rear crankshaft seal is for VS30 Sprinters equipped with the 2.0L OM654 diesel engine. It is not compatible with VS30 models equipped with the 3.0L OM642 or NCV3 Sprinters equipped with the 2.1L OM651. Always verify your engine code and VIN before ordering.
